The Ganzá is a simple percussion instrument, consisting of one or several hollow, aluminium cylinders, partly filled with sand, tiny metal balls or dried seeds.

In Samba bands, Ganzas play a “continuum” phrase, that is, a repetitive pattern, following a constant to and fro motion, emphasizing the main beat for others to pick out easily.
This pretty loud model (double cylindrical body) is suitable for small to mid-size bands, including small, Carnival “baterias”. In larger ensembles, it should be replaced by a chocalho.
his model though, has a remarkable weight/volume ratio, as most percussionists report. This is particularly nice, as ganzá playing is, on the long term, requires a lot of physical effort.
