Small dununba/sanbang/kenkeni bell
This wrought iron bell made in Burkina is used with all three drums. The patterns played on the bells insert and fill in intervals between drum beats.
Such african bells are hit with a metal rod, ring or, less often a wooden stick.
They can have different forms, sizes and names, depending on the region.
They usually come in 3-piece sets:
- a small one for the kenkeni (about 5 in long and 2.5 in wide at its widest end)
- a middle-sized for sangban (about 6 in long and 3 in wide at its widest end)
- a large one for the dundunba (about 8 in long and 3.5 in wide at its widest end)
The bell’s sound is frequently muffled with thick adhesive tape. It may be used as a hand-percussion, too.
Delivered with a metal stick.
