The Kayamb (Caïambe, Cayombe...) or maravane is a typical instrument from La Réunion, Mauritius and Rodrigues Islands, as well as Madagascar. It is part of the accompaniment to Maloya and Sega, the two main musical styles of these Indian Ocean Islands, influenced by bothb Africa and Asia.
It consists of two layers of aligned stems of reed or sugar cane, fastened into a framed tray. The gap between the 2 layers is filled with jequirity or canna seeds. The swaying movement of the kayamb player produces a wave-like sound.
This model is hand-made and imported directly from Madagascar at a rock-bottom price !
