The thundertube consists of a small one-headed drum with a long, thin spring attached to the centre of its head (on the outside) and hanging down freely.

The player slips his or her hand into the handle and holds the drum downwards, shaking it gently to make the spring "fidget".
The resulting sound is impressive! The instrument imitates the rumbling of thunder and when the spring hits any solid surface around, it gives lightning sound too.
