Pandeiro is an essential item in Brazilian culture, as it is used in inumerous styles of music. A frame drum with jingles, it is related to the "adoufe" (a square tambourine native to Portugal) and to the oriental Riqq.
This quite sophisticated instrument allows the player a large number of different sounds. Pandeiro is played throughout Brazil in various types of music: Samba, choro, forró, “regional”… A good pandeiro player is supposed to be able to imitate all sounds of a drum band : hitting the outer part of the head with the thumb gives a low note while slaps on the center of it produces a dry, loud impact. As for the jingles, they add a crisp touch to the instrument’s overall sound range.
Contemporãnea (most famous Brazilian percussion manufacturer) has designed the "Light" line to give access to quality instruments to a wide public (very reasonnable prices).
The Contemporanea Light, 10 in, synthetic-head pandeiro can be used in Capoeira or any other kind of musical situations. It has much more overtone than a natural-head pandeiro but it is sturdy and does not suffer from humidity at all.
