A percussion instrument of the idiophones family, it consists of a single moulded piece of material, in the shape of a narrow necked, vase-like pot, with a circular hole in the side and an opening at the top. The Udu drum is present in more than one continent and has a variety of shapes and methods of making and playing. It is used in very different musical environments, from traditional forms to vanguard Jazz. Originally from Niger, its name means "bottle" in the local idiom.
Like the "basic" Schlagwerk model, this udu has clear, sharp, high-pitched notes and a very pleasant rustling sound, when rubbed. Its distinctive feature is a richer range of bass sounds that create a different balance.
