A percussion instrument of the idiophones family, it consists of a single moulded piece of material, in the shape of a narrow necked, vase-like pot, with a circular hole in the side and an opening at the top. The Udu drum is present in more than one continent and has a variety of shapes and methods of making and playing. It is used in very different musical environments, from traditional forms to vanguard Jazz. Originally from Niger, its name means "bottle" in the local idiom.
This particular model has a larger top-hole than other udus of the Schlagwerk range. This results in a wider range of bass sounds and a larger control of modulation, which brings the instrument closer to the Indian tabla family. As for high-pitched notes, they are particularly sharp and clear, which encourages finger-playing.
