Made out of wrought iron, this "finger bell" is native to West Africa. Light and adapted to all kinds of hands, it used to play the main beat, or to play "ostinati" (repetitive patterns) to accompany rhythms of the dunun section.
The bell hangs on the player's index and is struck by the same hand's thumb (which wears a ring). Using his/her hand as a claw, the player can modify the bell's sound, muffle it or, on the contrary, ply it wide open to produce overtones.
Finger bells are often played along with other bells, singing... Its size makes it a convenient accessory, easy to take away and to mix with other types of percussion instruments.
