The Garrahand is an innovative instrument which results from the Caribean Steel Drum and the Swiss Hang experiences. It is a relative of such melodic percussions as Hapi Drum, Tongue Drum or Spacedrum.

The Garrahand was first designed as a commission by renowned Argentinian percussionist Mariano Cantero. It then started to be used by percussionists and drummers in various music styles. Its evolution was conditioned by the remarks made by them and carefully collected, in order to change and meet the needs of professional musicians. The Garrahand comes to fill in a gap in the life of any percussionist, because it is both a hand- and melodic percussion instrument.

It is about the size of a small drum, therefore takes little space inside a percussion set, and provides 7 notes of a unique, lilting sound. It can be played with bare hands or fingers (no special sticks needed) although it can also be played with felted sticks without any risks, thanks to the extra resistant steel it is made of.

Garrahand playing technique is very simple. Any person can play complex phrases after a couple of hours of training, by mere intuition.

The principal features of the Garrahand are :

  • A special microphone system (with a 1/4" Jack and a XLR output)
  • A damper
  • Cymbal holder
  • 7 keys/bars/tongues (perfect shape due to computer-managed cutting)
  • Quick and easy tuning with a nearly 3-tone range
  • Amplified melodic range, over 2 octaves
  • Weight : 1,450 Kg per unit
  • Diameter : 9"3/4
  • Height : 7"

Garrahand comes in two units without bag and stick. We recommend the use of the special Garrahand protection bag to keep your instrument safe from any damage.
