“Stock rhythms II” - Book + CD
Language: French
Second volume of a series dedicated to world music rhythms, “Rythmes en stock : Brésil” follows the same principle: offering a musical travel inside a given culture through a serious, accessible pedagogical process.
Olivier Noclin, the series’ artistic director, ordered samba ensemble Estação Esquirol five original pieces to be used as learning material for percussion-playing and singing.
A few introductory pages give some useful, basic information on Brazilian music in general, and its most successful form, Samba, in particular. The book then focuses on the components and organisation of a bateria (Samba drum band). Each piece emphasizes a different traditional rhythmic variant (slow samba, samba reggae, Partido alto, Carnival samba, Maracatú) with each percussion-part fully detailled, while the CD includes several different tracks for each piece: a full version and playback versions for percussions and singing.
The songs’ lyrics (with pronunciation tips) and scores are given too, so that the whole work constitutes a well-designed teaching aid to run efficient group sessions.
Created with a total respect to original, Brazilian rhythmic patterns, this tutor provides a very good starting point to get more familiar with Brazilian popular music, which teachers, enthusiasts and learners will appreciate and enjoy.
