African Rhythms, by Mokhtar Samba – Book + CD
Language: English, French
Aiming at intermediate, to advanced-level drummers, "African Rhythms and independence for drumset" deals with African rhythms with an approach specifically developped by drummer and percussionist Mokhtar Samba.
Beginning drumset learners who can read scores will appreciate this tutor which teaches unusual playing techniques that they can practice separately.
The result of more than 20 years of live experience as a sideman for Manu Dibango, Richard Bona, Salif Keita, or Youssou N’Dour, this tutor introduces learners to rhythms usually played with hands (on djembé, sabar or karkabous). It consists of a musical journey through North Africa, Guinea, Senegal and Cameroun.
Each of the six studied rhythms (Gnawa, Maghreb, Mangambe, Bikutsi, Doudoumba and Sabar) have its own dedicated exercises to let the drummer understand and get used to their respective kinds of "grooves".
Although it is clearly and deliberately practice-oriented (thanks to its 96-track CD in just 38 minutes), this work also gives plenty of useful, technical and historical information.
With the help of three guest-percussionists (Gérard Carocci, Idi Diop et Michel Fernandez), this tutor opens musical doors and encourages creativity.
