Pandeiro is an essential item in Brazilian culture, as it is used in inumerous styles of music. A frame drum with jingles, it is related to the "adoufe" (a square tambourine native to Portugal) and to the oriental Riqq.
A good pandeiro player is supposed to be able to imitate all sounds of a drum band : hitting the outer part of the head with the thumb gives a low note while slaps on the center of it produces a dry, loud impact. As for the jingles, they add a crisp touch to the instrument’s overall sound range.. Pandeiro is played throughout Brazil in various types of music: Samba, choro, forró, “regional”…
