Pandeiro is considered by many THE Brazilian national music instrument. A frame drum with jingles, it is related to the "adoufe" (a square tambourine native to Portugal) and to the oriental Riqq.
This quite sophisticated instrument allows the player a large number of different sounds. Pandeiro is played throughout Brazil in various types of music: Samba, choro, forró, “regional”… A good pandeiro player is supposed to be able to imitate all sounds of a drum band : hitting the outer part of the head with the thumb gives a low note while slaps on the center of it produces a dry, loud impact. As for the jingles, they add a crisp touch to the instrument’s overall range.
This pandeiro has a formica frame and a synthetic, hologrphic head with an original Brazilian-flag design. Extremely sturdy, it was designed to play basic patterns as well as tricky variations and solos, with a loud, precise, high-pitched sound with very little sustain. It differs greatly from a natural-head, traditional pandeiro, though it is a top-of-the-range model, as far as modern samba is concerned. It should be used with its head very tense.
