In Samba percussion bands (baterias), repiniques play a particular, major part. The repinique player sometimes leads the drummers along the song’s rhythmic arrangement with specific codified phrases announcing breaks or changes of patterns.
A repinique is a plain, two-headed drum, slightly deeper (higher) than a snare drum, but it doesn’t have a snare. Its nylon heads are tightened through a simple tuning-rod system. It is held at waist-height with a shoulder strap.
In Rio de Janeiro, Repinique playing requires the use of one hand and one short stick and involves stick bouncing techniques (typically with the right hand) as well as hand slaps (left hand). In Salvador (Bahia), repinique is played with two flexible sticks.
This professional repinique designed by Contemporãnea, the best Brazilian percussion maker, boasts brilliant manufacture and finishing. It is loud (a very important feature) and should satisfy the most demanding musicians.
The 10 in model is the highest-pitched of the range.
