Timbal is a Brazilian drum typically used in Bahian (North-eastern) types of large drum bands (baterias), whose musical style is sometimes refered-to as "samba-reggae" (a somewhat restrictive designation for each district-based gathering (bloco) in Salvador developped its own rhythmic identity and gave it a specific name). One of these "blocos afros", created in the late 80's, is considered responsible for the reappearance of a then nearly-forgotten hand drum: Timbal.
A timbal is a pretty light, long, slightly conical hand-drum. It has a very tight, nylon head and it is designed to play loud, rapid phrases and solos with powerful slaps, in a similar way to African djembe, which timbal certainly stems from.
This professional model by Contemporãnea is designed for intensive use on the long run. It is not as powerful as the aluminium model but has less overtones and a warmer sound quality.
