Marimbula can be described as a larger relative of the African sanza. It was developped in the Caribbean Islands, was used in different musical styles, especially Changüi, as well as in Jamaica, under the name of "rumba box".
It is the original Caribbean Bass. The eight metal keys or "tongues" are attached to the box in such a manner that they can be individually tuned to a scale from D to G.
This model is tuned to an F-major pentatonic scale. It can be played by hand or with mallets. Using mallets yields clear, fresh high tones. It was designed, made and finished with particular care, which results in a top-of-the-range instrument, though with a reasonable price. Its sound is clear and deep.
A Marimbula player typically sits on it like on a Cajon.
An exciting instrument to discover!
